Security agencies announced they would not comply with Governor Abba Yusuf’s order to arrest the deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, following his sudden arrival in the city.
The governor accused Bayero of “creating tension in the state” after being smuggled into Kano two days following his deposition.
Governor Yusuf, via a statement from his Director General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Tofa, alleged that Bayero attempted to forcefully return to the palace.
“The former Emir was smuggled into Kano city last night in an attempt to forcefully return to the palace,” Yusuf stated.

However, Kano Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Usain Gumel, announced at a press briefing that the police and other security agencies would not enforce the arrest order.
He cited a court order restraining the state government from enforcing the new law that reinstated Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano.
“The Police Command is expressly obeying the Court Order with SUIT No. FHC/KN/CS/182/2024, dated May 23, 2024, issued by the Federal High Court sitting in Kano alongside all law enforcement agents in the state,” Gumel stated.
Accompanied by heads of various security agencies, including the NSCDC, Army, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Correctional Center, Gumel reassured the public of their commitment to maintaining peace.
“We are calling on members of the public to remain calm, patient, and cooperate with security agencies as the matter will be addressed by the Court on June 3, 2024.”

Gumel warned against any attempts to disrupt the peace, stating that miscreants would face the full force of the law. He emphasized that security agencies were fully prepared to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
In response, Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo asserted that nothing could alter Sanusi’s reinstatement. Speaking from the Emir’s palace, Gwarzo challenged the validity of the court order and accused the police of escorting Bayero back into the state.
“When we asked who gave the court order, they said Justice Mohammed Liman. The judge who is in America?” he questioned.
Gwarzo maintained that the state government was committed to preventing bloodshed and ensuring Sanusi’s authority as the reinstated Emir.
