Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has reinstated Muhammad Sanusi II as the new Emir of Kano.
This came four years after the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was dethroned by former Kano Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Governor Yusuf confirmed the reinstatement of the monarch on Thursday evening, shortly after signing Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law.
“With the full support of the kingmakers, I have approved the reappointment of Malam Sanusi Lamido,” the governor said.
The new law replaces the Kano State Emirates Council Law, 2019, and dissolves the emirate councils created by Governor Yusuf’s predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

It was based on the law that Ganduje split the Kano Emirate into five in December 2019 and deposed the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on March 9, 2020.
The emirates created by the Ganduje administration were Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya, in addition to Kano.
The governor, however, gave the outgoing Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, 48 hours to vacate the Emir’s palace.

Earlier, the state house of assembly passed the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024 on Thursday.
The bill, according to the 10th Assembly, abolished the establishment of five new emirates in the state.
The bill, which scaled through the second and third readings on Thursday, was sponsored by Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the Majority Leader and representative of the Dala Constituency.
Following the passage of the bill, all offices created under the repealed law have been dissolved, and district heads appointed or elevated under the previous legislation are to revert to their former positions.
