Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed support for Nigerian nurses seeking for greener pastures abroad.

While addressing students at the College of Nursing Sciences, Obi encouraged graduates to pursue their careers wherever they find better opportunities.

“I have always told the Nursing Council not to restrict you people from travelling abroad after graduation. If it is not going to work for you here, go to where it will work for you,” he said.

Obi who over the weekend made a N50 million donation to Peter University in Achina/Onneh and contributed an additional N10 million to the School of Nursing Sciences, Adazi-Nnukwu.

He highlighted the practical challenges young professionals face in Nigeria, expressing that he understands their decision to seek greener pastures.

Obi shared a personal example, mentioning his former personal assistant, Michael-Jude, who relocated to the United Kingdom after marrying a nurse. “As I am now, I am looking for a new PA,” Obi added.

Obi’s comments resonate in the context of Nigeria’s healthcare sector, which has seen a notable “brain drain” as professionals move abroad in search of better working conditions and quality of life.

The former governor expressed optimism that, with improvements to Nigeria, many would be willing to return home.
