The Kano State Police Command has apprehended a 42-year-old man, Hamisu Ibrahim, for impersonating a police officer and extorting money from residents under the guise of helping them secure bail for their relatives.

The arrest, confirmed by the command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, was made public in a statement on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

According to the statement, credible intelligence led to the suspect’s capture. “On November 18, 2024, at about 1:30 pm, we received credible information about an individual pretending to be a police officer attached to a court in Ungogo Local Government Area,” Kiyawa said.

Acting on directives from the Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ungogo swiftly apprehended Ibrahim, a resident of Jangaru Village in Ungogo LGA.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had been exploiting innocent citizens by pretending to be a Court Duty Police Officer.

Two victims have so far come forward, testifying that Ibrahim extorted money from them in exchange for promises to assist in securing the bail of their relatives.

“This arrest is a testament to the commitment of the Police Command to sanitizing the system, protecting the public, and rooting out individuals seeking to undermine the good work of the police in Kano State,” the statement read.

For reporting, citizens can contact the police through the following numbers: – 08032419754,081238215, 09029292926

Ibrahim remains in custody as investigations continue, and authorities have assured that he will face the full weight of the law.
