PDP Slams Kwankwaso Over Claims That Party Is “Dead”

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticized former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for his recent remarks that the party is “dead” in Nigeria. Kwankwaso, who served as the 2023 presidential candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), made the controversial statement during the inauguration of NNPP’s renovated party office in Katsina State on Saturday.

In a strong response to media inquiries from Abuja, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, described Kwankwaso’s comments as a display of “selfishness, inflated ego, and an exaggerated sense of self-importance.”

Ologunagba accused Kwankwaso of lacking true leadership qualities and asserted that his only significant national recognition came during his tenure with the PDP.

“Our reaction to the statement credited to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso is that he is very inconsequential in Nigerian national politics today, judging from the fact that he is struggling to lead a party called NNPP, which is also struggling to control only one state,” Ologunagba stated on Sunday.

Kwankwaso, during his speech on Saturday, claimed that he and his followers left the PDP because “it is dead,” adding that the NNPP is now poised to take over many states and that he is preparing to become President in 2027.

In his rebuke, Ologunagba highlighted the PDP’s continued influence in Nigerian politics, noting that the party currently controls thirteen governorships, numerous seats in the Senate and House of Representatives, and has a strong presence in local government areas and wards across the country.

“It is unfathomable to imagine that a failed and inconsequential politician with only one state would claim that a party with such a vast influence is dead,” Ologunagba remarked. He further criticized Kwankwaso for what he termed “extreme selfishness and self-centeredness,” especially at a time when Nigeria is facing severe economic hardship.

Ologunagba pointed to the struggles faced by Nigerians under the current administration, including soaring inflation, a weakened currency, and skyrocketing fuel prices, lamenting that Kwankwaso’s primary concern seems to be his own political ambitions.

“At a time when over 150 million Nigerians have sunk deeper into poverty… the only thing that occupies Senator Kwankwaso’s mind is his self-centered pipe dream of becoming President. It is very unfortunate,” Ologunagba said.

The PDP spokesman concluded by downplaying Kwankwaso’s relevance in the current political landscape, suggesting that whatever political significance he might claim was only achieved during his time with the PDP.
