The Nigerian government has issued a travel advisory cautioning its citizens against traveling to Australia, citing a surge in Islamophobic and antisemitic incidents.
This warning was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in response to an earlier advisory from Australia regarding security concerns in Nigeria.
Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Acting Spokesperson for the Ministry, explained that the advisory became necessary due to “recent reports of discrimination, harassment, and verbal abuse targeted at foreigners” in Australia.

He expressed concern over the rising cases of hate crimes, noting that Australia’s reputation for multiculturalism and tolerance has recently been marred by such incidents.
Ebienfa highlighted a disturbing event in Woollahra, a Sydney suburb, where a vehicle was set ablaze, and anti-Israel graffiti was spray-painted on nearby buildings.
He linked the incident to a broader increase in antisemitic and Islamophobic activity, exacerbated by international tensions and conflicts.
“This event is part of a broader increase in both antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents in Australia, coinciding with international conflicts and tensions,” Ebienfa stated.
The Ministry urged Nigerians residing in or planning to travel to Australia to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Travelers were also encouraged to be mindful of Australia’s cultural and social dynamics to ensure their safety and comfort.
For Nigerians already in Australia, the Ministry emphasized the importance of reporting incidents of harassment or attacks to the High Commission of Nigeria in Canberra.
