With a heart heavy with grief and compassion, the Honourable Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Yusuf Atta, has expressed his deepest condolences to the families, teammates, coaches, and communities mourning the loss of 22 young athletes who tragically lost their lives in a devastating road accident.
The athletes were returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when the fatal crash occurred.
In a heartfelt message conveyed through his media aide, Mr. Seyi Olorunsola, the Minister described the incident as “heart-rending” and one that has cast a shadow of sorrow over the entire nation.

“These young men and women were more than competitors on the field—they were symbols of aspiration, discipline, courage, and national pride,” the Minister said. “In their pursuit of sporting excellence, they demonstrated the strength of character and spirit that defines the very best of our youth.”
Rt. Hon. Atta emphasized the immense loss felt not just by the immediate families of the deceased, but also by Nigeria’s broader sporting community and the country as a whole. He noted that the athletes’ energy, talent, and unwavering commitment to excellence had inspired hope in a stronger and brighter Nigeria.
“The loss of such vibrant lives is a monumental blow—not only to their families and loved ones—but to Nigeria’s sporting community and our collective future,” he said. “Their dreams and contributions, though cruelly cut short, will forever remain etched in our hearts and national memory.”

The Minister called the tragedy a stark reminder of the fragility of life and urged all stakeholders to prioritize the safety and well-being of citizens, especially young Nigerians who embody the nation’s future.
On behalf of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and in his personal capacity, Rt. Hon.
