Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a 32-year-old man, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga, 39, and the theft of her mobile phone.

Grassroots Parrot reports that the command received a distress call in February 2025 regarding the suspicious death of Effanga in her apartment.

Upon arrival, officers observed visible marks of violence on her face and neck, indicating that she had been strangled and beaten.

“The scene was processed, evidence was documented, and the body was evacuated to the hospital, where medical personnel confirmed her clinically dead,” said DSP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer. “The corpse was subsequently deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”

Following an investigation, detectives identified Nelson as the last person seen with the deceased. He had visited her residence on the morning of February 6, 2025—his birthday.

The police later tracked him to a church in Uyo, where he attempted to flee upon sighting officers but was swiftly apprehended.

During interrogation, Nelson admitted to visiting Effanga that morning and requesting to use her phone to take pictures for his birthday celebration. When she refused, an altercation ensued.

“He confessed to strangling her with his hands and striking her head on the floor with fist blows until she lost consciousness,” DSP John revealed. “After committing the act, he fled the scene with her phone.”

At the time of his arrest, officers recovered an Itel Super Phone belonging to the deceased. A post-mortem examination has since confirmed the cause of death, and the suspect is set to be charged in court.

Commenting on the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, assured that justice would be served.

“We will not tolerate any form of domestic violence or criminal behavior,” Azare stated. “I urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police.”
