MAI MARTABA

Nigeria’s official submission for the 2025 Oscars, Mai Martaba, has earned four nominations at the prestigious Septimius Awards in Amsterdam, one of Europe’s leading platforms celebrating diverse voices and global cinema.

The critically acclaimed film will compete in four major categories: Best African Film, Best African Actor, Best Costume Design, and Best Make-Up & Hairstyling.

Director Prince Daniel expressed excitement over the recognition, describing it as a significant moment for Nigerian cinema, particularly the Kannywood industry. “It is a privilege to be one of the voices carrying our stories to the world. This recognition is not just for Mai Martaba but for the entire industry and the culture it represents,” he said.

Mai Martaba has been making waves internationally. Earlier this year, it was among only three Nollywood films showcased at the Nollywood in Hollywood event in Los Angeles, where it drew praise for its compelling narrative and cultural authenticity.

At the Septimius Awards, Mai Martaba will contend with South Africa’s Oscar entry Old Righteous Blues, Kenya’s selection Nawi, and other globally acclaimed films. The nominations further cement its position as one of Africa’s strongest contenders on the international stage.

The film has also made its mark across the continent, winning Best Costume Design at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and securing a nomination for Best Indigenous Language (West Africa) at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

Celebrated for its powerful storytelling and cultural depth, Mai Martaba has been hailed as a landmark achievement in Nigerian cinema. Its recognition at the Septimius Awards underscores the growing global appreciation for African narratives and creativity.
