Tragedy struck the Kogi State University community on Tuesday, July 15, following the sudden death of a senior lecturer, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, during an alleged sexual encounter with a 22-year-old student at a hotel in Anyigba.

The deceased, a lecturer in the Department of Social Studies Education, reportedly checked into the hotel with the student, identified as Gloria Samuel, a 200-level undergraduate in his department.

According to a statement by the Kogi State Police Command, the incident was reported by the hotel manager, Moses Friday, who stated that the student had rushed to the reception area to raise an alarm after the lecturer collapsed shortly after their encounter.

Police spokesperson SP William Ovye Aya, who confirmed the incident, described it as “unfortunate” and said the matter was under thorough investigation. He added that an autopsy has already been conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death.

“The lecturer was confirmed dead by a medical doctor after being rushed to the hospital,” Aya said. “We have taken the student into custody, and she has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.”

Although the cause of death remains unconfirmed, sources allege that the late Dr. Ibikunle may have consumed multiple energy drinks before the incident. However, the police have not officially commented on this claim.

The development has sent shockwaves across the university community, where the late lecturer was known to be married with children.

The police assured that further actions will be taken based on the outcome of ongoing investigations.
