Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has issued a stern warning over the defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the party, saying the decision will have far-reaching consequences.

Kwankwaso, who is also the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, spoke during an interview aired on BBC Hausa, where he described the governor’s exit as shocking and difficult to comprehend.

According to the former Kano State governor, Yusuf’s decision to abandon the NNPP — the platform that brought him to power — has unsettled party members and supporters across the state.

Kwankwaso cautioned that the governor and others who defected alongside him would, in time, come to regret the move.

“Political decisions always have consequences. Those who left will eventually understand the implications of what they have done,” he warned.

The NNPP leader further revealed that several individuals had approached him to express doubts and confusion surrounding the defection, with some suggesting that it might have been part of a broader political arrangement.

“Several people have come to me saying they believe what happened was part of an arrangement, either between me and him or between me and those around him,” Kwankwaso said.

“Even I, on many occasions, find it hard to believe that events unfolded the way they did.”

He stressed that time would ultimately reveal the full implications of the decision, noting that political actions often carry long-term consequences beyond immediate gains.

It will be recalled that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, following his resignation from the NNPP on Friday, a move that has continued to generate intense political reactions within and outside Kano State.
