A woman, Maimuna Umar Gora, has asked a Kano Shari’a Court sitting in Danbare, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, to dissolve her two-year-old marriage Sabo Shehu Kabara. Marriage which she claims was contracted without her consent and solely for material gain.
Appearing before Khadi Munzali Idris Gwadabe, Gora said her parents gave her in marriage to Kabara because of his farmland and local influence.
According to her, the union was arranged without her knowledge or acceptance, and she has never developed feelings for the man.
“I am in love with someone else,” Gora told the court. “But my parents accepted this marriage because he [Kabara] owns a farm in our town. I didn’t know him before they gave me away.”

She revealed that she had previously approached other courts in an effort to dissolve the marriage but had not been successful, prompting her to bring the case before the Shari’a Court.
Khadi Gwadabe, after listening to her plea, ordered that the estranged husband, Sabo Shehu Kabara, be served a court summons. The judge then adjourned the matter to June 12 for further hearing.
The case highlights ongoing concerns around arranged marriages where parental authority often supersedes individual consent, particularly among women.
Advocacy groups have increasingly called for reforms to protect women’s rights under both civil and Islamic legal frameworks.
More developments are expected when the case resumes next month.
