The Kano State Government has announced the suspension of its end-of-month environmental sanitation exercise for March 2025 in honor of the upcoming Sallah celebration.
Dr. Dahiru Mohammad Hashim, the State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, made the announcement, stating that the decision was taken to allow residents to focus on preparations for the festivities.
“The government recognizes the significance of Sallah and the need for people to make necessary arrangements.
“Being a major commercial hub in northern Nigeria, Kano experiences an influx of traders and visitors from neighboring states during this period. The suspension of the sanitation exercise will facilitate smooth business and travel activities,” Dr. Hashim explained.

However, the Commissioner clarified that the special sanitation exercise scheduled for Friday, March 28, 2025, would still be observed in government ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs), motor parks, and marketplaces.
A statement issued by spokesperson of the Ministry, Ismail Garba Gwammaja quoted the commissioner as saying while the state remains committed to maintaining a clean and healthy environment, it also acknowledges the importance of cultural and religious celebrations.
“This decision reflects the government’s dedication to balancing its environmental responsibilities with the needs of the community,” he added.
The statement urged residents to continue practicing good hygiene and proper waste disposal despite the temporary suspension. He confirmed that the end-of-month sanitation exercise would resume in April 2025.
