  • The Kano State Government has announced its readiness to commence work on the playing surface of the Sani Abacha Stadium, aiming to complete the project before the start of the 2024–25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

This pledge was made by the Commissioner of Youths and Sports, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, during a meeting with the management committee of Kano Pillars, led by Chairman Ali Na Yara Mai Samba.

The state government’s commitment to the project follows the recent approval for the reconstitution of the board of Kano Pillars, the state’s NPFL team. Speaking on the occasion, Kwankwaso assured the board of his full support and encouraged them to work diligently towards restoring the club to its former glory.

“Your selection was done based on merit after spending weeks studying the potential impact each of you could bring to the club,” said Kwankwaso. “I urge all of you to work together as a team for the betterment of the club.”

Kwankwaso also announced that work on the Sani Abacha Stadium’s playing surface would begin shortly and be completed before the new NPFL season kicks off. He assured that the project would be executed in phases, with a new playing field laid down promptly.

In his response, Board Chairman Mai Samba expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for his role in selecting the best individuals to lead the four-time Nigerian league champions. He promised that the board would do everything possible to justify the confidence placed in them.

The Kano State Government’s initiative is a significant step towards enhancing the facilities of the Sani Abacha Stadium, ensuring it meets the standards required for the NPFL. This development is expected to bolster the performance and morale of the Kano Pillars as they prepare for the upcoming season with renewed vigor and improved infrastructure.
