The Kano State High Court, presided over by Justice Nasir Saminu has sentenced a man Abdurrahman Yakubu to death by hanging for armed robbery.

Yakubu, a resident of Bele Local Government Area in Nassarawa State, was convicted on multiple counts of armed robbery involving dangerous weapons.

The court found Yakubu guilty of attacking several victims, including a woman identified as Barrister Hajara Lawal Ahmad. During the robbery, Yakubu stole her car and an unspecified sum of money, leaving a trail of fear and distress.

Justice Saminu, delivering the judgment, stated that the prosecution, led by government lawyer Barrister Umar Yakubu, had presented compelling evidence that proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

He dismissed the defence’s arguments, citing their inability to counter the evidence against the accused.

The court also ruled that the firearms recovered from Yakubu were not only illegal but were being used for criminal activities. This added weight to the decision to impose the maximum penalty under the law.

“The court has carefully considered all the evidence presented and finds the defendant guilty as charged. The use of illegal firearms in these heinous acts cannot be condoned.

Therefore, Abdurrahman Yakubu is hereby sentenced to death by hanging,” Justice Saminu declared.

The judgment sends a strong message about the consequences of armed robbery and the illegal use of firearms.

Legal experts and members of the public have lauded the court’s decision, viewing it as a step towards curbing violent crimes in the state.

However, some human rights groups have reiterated their stance against the death penalty, advocating for its abolition in Nigeria.

As of the time of this report, there is no indication whether Yakubu’s legal team plans to appeal the ruling.
