A magistrate court in Kano State has sentenced popular TikTok content creator Abubakar Usman, widely known as Kilina, to one year in a correctional facility for promoting indecent behavior and cross-dressing in his social media content.

The verdict was delivered by Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad Hassan of Court No. 21. Kilina, a well-known figure in the Kano entertainment scene, was found guilty of using vulgar language and promoting offensive content in violation of public decency laws.

The case was filed by the Kano State Film Censorship Board, which accused Kilina of consistently publishing videos on TikTok that featured cross-dressing, explicit language, and themes considered immoral under Kano’s censorship guidelines.

In her ruling, Magistrate Hassan also gave the TikToker the option of paying a N100,000 fine in place of jail time and ordered him to pay N30,000 in compensation to the Censorship Board for “wasting the board’s time.”

The magistrate issued a stern warning, urging Kilina to desist from creating or sharing content that undermines public morals. She emphasized that any future violation would attract the full penalty without the option of a fine.

This ruling is the latest in a series of actions by the Kano State government to clamp down on content it deems inappropriate, particularly on social media platforms.
