Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Peter Rufai, is dead.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the tragic news on Thursday in a tribute shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion.
Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai,” the statement read.
Fondly known as Dodo Mayana, Rufai was widely respected for his agility, leadership, and charisma on the field. He made 65 appearances for the national team and was instrumental in Nigeria’s historic triumph at the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia, where the Super Eagles clinched their second continental title.

Rufai also proudly represented Nigeria at two FIFA World Cup tournaments—in the USA in 1994 and France in 1998—playing a key role in Nigeria’s rise on the global football stage during the 1990s.
His career also spanned notable club stints in Europe, including in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain, where he played for Deportivo La Coruña and Hércules CF.
