The Lagos State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, Jelili Sulaimon, citing allegations of misconduct, defiance, and financial mismanagement.

The suspension, which takes effect immediately, was announced during a plenary session on Monday, October 7.

The lawmakers also directed the Vice Chairman of the council, Akinpelu Johnson, to assume the role of acting chairman. The Assembly instructed the council’s management, including the council manager and treasurer, to recognize Johnson’s authority and provide him with the necessary support.

According to a statement issued by Eromosele Ebhomele, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, the unanimous decision to suspend Sulaimon followed a motion raised by the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon.

He recalled an incident in April 2024, when chaos erupted in the Iyana-Ipaja axis of Alimosho, leading to the death of one Mr. Micheal Ajayi.

Okanlawon alleged that the council chairman was responsible for instigating the violence and that Sulaimon showed misconduct and failed to cooperate with the House committee during the investigation.

He further accused Sulaimon of non-compliance with the Assembly’s directives and mismanagement of public funds, prompting his recommendation for the chairman’s immediate suspension.

“The Alimosho council chairman has not adhered to proper procurement processes or budgetary guidelines. There have been numerous instances of misconduct,” said Hon. Noheem Adams, Majority Leader of the House, while supporting the motion.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya, referenced a report from the State Auditor-General, highlighting Sulaimon’s persistent non-compliance with financial regulations and irregularities in his financial records.

Hon. Ladi Ajomale and Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh also expressed concern over the council chairman’s behavior, urging the House to take decisive action.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over the session, directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to communicate the Assembly’s resolution to all relevant authorities.
