Former Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has explained his decision to step down from the coaching role, citing the intense pressure and stress of managing the Nigerian national team.
Peseiro, who spent 22 months in charge, left the position after his contract expired in February, following Nigeria’s second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Speaking to SABC Sport, the 64-year-old Portuguese coach said he had decided to leave even before the tournament ended due to the toll the job was taking on him.
“I decided that when I finished AFCON, I would leave. I had put too much effort into my job, and it was too much stress. Everyone supported me—my family and the players—but I grew fatigued,” Peseiro revealed. “I thought it was enough for me, even if I had won the AFCON.”
Despite the challenges, Peseiro described his time with Nigeria as a “special” experience. He praised the Super Eagles, saying they performed well in the AFCON and believed they were the best team in the tournament until their loss to hosts Cote d’Ivoire.

Peseiro, who has also coached Venezuela, is currently without a job but is waiting for the right opportunity. He disclosed that he has received offers from clubs in South Africa, Europe, and Brazil but has not yet accepted any.
“I’m waiting for a good job, a good step. Someone mentioned the Sundowns job and other things, but so far, nothing special,” Peseiro remarked.
