The Kano State High Court, on Friday, sentenced a housewife, Fadila Adamu, to death by hanging for the murder of her childhood friend’s eight-year-old daughter, Aisha Sani.

The case, which dates back to 2019, saw Fadila Adamu convicted of kidnapping and culpable homicide after she kidnapped the minor and threw her into a well, leading to her death.

According to reports, Aisha was on her way home from Islamiyya school when she was abducted. Her lifeless body was discovered two weeks later in a well at Gandu Albasa Quarters, Kano.

Delivering the judgment, trial judge Yusuf Muhammad-Ubale stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction of the defendant.

“I hereby sentence the defendant to death by hanging for kidnapping and throwing the victim into a well, which caused her death,” the judge ruled.

Prosecution lawyer Lamido Abba-Sorondinki informed the court that the crime occurred on July 14, 2019, at Tudun Wada Quarters, Kano.

He revealed that at around 4:45 p.m., the defendant kidnapped the minor and took her to her house, deceiving her sister by claiming that the child was the daughter of her friend, who had traveled to Ghana.

Three days later, on July 17, at about 6:30 p.m., the defendant threw the child into a deep well at Tukuntawa Quarters, Kano, leading to her tragic death.

The prosecution presented seven witnesses, including statements from the defendant and a medical report confirming the victim’s death. The offence was found to be in violation of Sections 274(b) and 221(a) of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, denied committing the crime. Her defense counsel, Zulaihat Tata, presented four witnesses, including the defendant, in an attempt to establish her innocence.

Despite the defense’s efforts, the court upheld the prosecution’s arguments, leading to the final judgment. The case has drawn significant public attention, as it highlights the legal system’s approach to justice for victims of violent crimes in Kano State.
