In a significant move to boost business activities and ease transportation challenges in Northern Nigeria, the federal government has launched a new freight train service from APM Terminals in Apapa, Lagos, to the Dala Inland Dry Port in Kano.

The inaugural service was presided over by the Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali, at the Dala Inland Dry Port.

During the launch, Alkali emphasized the substantial impact this initiative is expected to have on the region’s business operations, particularly in facilitating import and export processes.

“This project is crucial for easing the import and export processes for businesses in Northern Nigeria,” Alkali stated. “We are committed to developing a modern, safe, secure, and sustainable transportation network, recognizing transportation as a key element in economic growth.”

Alkali also highlighted the government’s accomplishments in securing financing for essential railway projects, including the completion of the Kaduna-Kano Standard Gauge and the ongoing construction of the Kano-Maradi rail line.

Ahmad Rabiu, the Managing Director of the Dala Inland Dry Port, remarked that the new train service would establish Kano as a pivotal hub for cargo processing and export.

He explained that the port, which spans 200 hectares, is the first port of destination in the hinterland with dedicated rail services, providing a streamlined approach to handling cargo.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam, lauded the initiative. He noted that the new service would significantly alleviate transportation challenges faced by businessmen in the region, particularly the hazards associated with the road transportation of goods.

“This initiative will greatly improve the efficiency and safety of transporting goods, providing a much-needed solution to the transportation challenges our businessmen face,” Abdussalam said.
