Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has vowed to sign the death warrant of the suspect who allegedly set a mosque ablaze at Larabar Abasawa village in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State, if found guilty of the offense.

“I will be more than happy to sign his death warrant if found guilty,” The governor said during his visit to the Murtala Muhammed hospital to commiserate with the ailing victims on Sunday.

Grassroots Parrot had reported how at least 15 people were confirmed dead so far after the suspected arsonist, Shafiu Abubakar, set a mosque on fire while worshippers were observing the early morning prayer around 5.30 a.m.

A family dispute over the sharing of inheritance reportedly led to the grief and death of the innocent worshippers trapped inside the mosque.

However, the governor went straight to the hospital from Malam Aminu Kano International Airport on Sunday after landing from Abuja to commiserate with the victims.

Governor Yusuf, who condemned what he described as an inhuman act, advised that the suspect should be convicted in a sharia court of law.

The governor explained that the arson was neither politically motivated nor an act of terrorism, reiterating that it was triggered by a rift between family members over inheritance.

He donated a cash support of N100,000 to each of the victims and promised to support the recovery of all the surviving victims.

He added that the state government will leave no stone unturned until justice is served against the alleged perpetrator.

The Spokesperson to the Governor, Sanusi Bature, quoted the victims of the fire incident as expressing joy and gratitude over the visit of the governor.

He noted that the governor has instructed the Chief Medical Director of the hospital to ensure the victims of the inferno receive the best medical treatment.
