Members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest advisory body in Lagos State, are divided over the impeachment of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.
The disagreement surfaced during discussions about the process that led to Obasa’s removal.
Senator Musliu Obanikoro and Senator Anthony Adefuye, both members of the GAC, expressed contrasting opinions. While Adefuye described the impeachment process as illegal, Obanikoro criticized his colleague’s statement as careless and divisive.
Senator Adefuye asserted in a recent interview that the process leading to Obasa’s removal was flawed. “What he is saying is that he was illegally removed, and the procedure was faulty, and I agree with him,” Adefuye said, voicing his support for the embattled former Speaker.

Reacting to Adefuye’s comments, Senator Obanikoro dismissed them as inappropriate and poorly timed. “The statement of Senator Adefuye on the removal of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, is very unfortunate, childish, and inconsequential,” Obanikoro said.
He stressed the importance of respecting hierarchy within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and avoiding public comments on unresolved internal matters. Obanikoro noted that President Bola Tinubu, a key leader of the APC, had already intervened, making individual opinions unnecessary.
“It is irresponsible for any member of this privileged body to go public on such a sensitive matter, especially when the GAC as a unit has not made any pronouncement,” he added.

The Secretary of the GAC, Mr. Mutiu Are, urged all parties to remain calm, emphasizing that the council would address the issue internally. “Whatever is currently going on in Lagos politics is a family affair. As an elder, I’m not supposed to take sides,” he stated.
Are assured that the GAC has mechanisms in place to resolve disputes of this nature and hinted at a peaceful resolution. “By my position as the secretary of the body, I’m not given express permission to speak on the matter. But I can tell you that we’ll resolve it in a family way,” he said.
Meanwhile, a group known as Lovers of Lagos has called for the arrest of Mudashiru Obasa, alleging that he continues to use the official residence of the Speaker despite his impeachment.
The unfolding events have highlighted divisions within the APC’s leadership in Lagos State, with stakeholders and observers closely monitoring how the GAC resolves the crisis.
