A renowned scholar and trailblazer in mass communication, Professor Ladi Sandra Adamu of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has passed away at the age of 67.
Her death was confirmed on Wednesday by Associate Professor Muhammad Hashim Suleiman, a colleague in the Department of Mass Communication, via a post on his official Facebook page.
According to reports, the distinguished academic died after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.
Professor Ladi Adamu made history as the first female professor of broadcasting in Northern Nigeria, inspiring generations of media scholars and practitioners with her pioneering work, mentorship, and commitment to gender equality in communication studies.

Her passing has thrown the ABU community, particularly the Department of Mass Communication, into mourning, with students, alumni, and colleagues expressing shock and grief over the loss of a “mother figure, mentor, and icon in Nigerian broadcasting education.”
Born on January 17, 1958, in Plateau State, Professor Adamu dedicated her life to advancing media education and research. Her legacy, colleagues say, will continue to shape the study and practice of broadcasting across Nigeria and beyond.
