The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Abaji Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Announcing the result on Sunday, the INEC Presiding Officer, Muhammad Usman, said Abubakar secured 15,535 votes to emerge victorious in the poll.
He defeated the candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), who scored 5,357 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate came third with 4,547 votes. The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) polled 53 votes, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) recorded 37 votes.
Declaring the result, Usman stated that Abubakar, having satisfied the requirements of the law, was duly returned elected as chairman of Abaji Area Council.
The result was announced less than 24 hours after voting concluded on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
The election formed part of the Federal Capital Territory area council polls conducted across all six councils Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali.
With the declaration, the APC has secured victories in Abaji, Kwali, AMAC and Bwari Area Councils, while the PDP won the chairmanship seat in Gwagwalada.
