Nigeria has lost one of its most revered business icons and philanthropists, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, who passed away in the early hours of Saturday in Abuja at the age of 94.
The news of his passing was confirmed by his Principal Private Secretary, Mustapha Junaid, in a heartfelt post shared on Facebook.
“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun. It is with heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved father Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and forgive his shortcomings,” Junaid wrote.
The Dantata family is expected to release details of the Janazah (funeral prayer) in due course.
Alhaji Aminu Dantata, a towering figure in Nigeria’s business landscape, was a leading industrialist and the chairman of the Dantata Group, with vast interests in construction, oil and gas, agriculture, and manufacturing.

He was also widely celebrated for his generosity and decades-long commitment to humanitarian causes, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
Born in 1931 into the illustrious Dantata family, Aminu Dantata built upon his father’s legacy—Alhassan Dantata, one of West Africa’s richest merchants in the early 20th century—and played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s post-independence economy.
Condolences have begun pouring in from across the country, with many Nigerians paying tribute to the late elder statesman’s contributions to commerce, community development, and Islamic causes.
His death marks the end of an era for Kano and Nigeria as a whole.
