In a bid to alleviate the severe economic strain on households, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has highlighted the hardships faced by many Nigerians, who are now forced to purchase only half portions of food items due to soaring prices.

Emir Sanusi described the situation as “unbearable” while speaking at a recent event where free fertilizers were distributed to 52,800 smallholder farmers in Kano State.

“People are in a dire situation. I’m aware that people now resort to buying half-priced foods because of the high cost of food items. This is unbearable. But I think with efforts like this, people can get some relief,” Sanusi remarked, emphasizing the pressing need for support during these challenging times.

The fertilizer distribution initiative, aimed at enhancing food security, provided each recipient, including women and people with disabilities, with 25 kg of fertilizer. The initiative is seen as a critical step towards supporting farmers and mitigating the high cost of food items.

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to backing farmers and ensuring affordable food for the population. The Emirs of Gaya and Karaye also supported the program, with the Emir of Gaya, Ali Ibrahim, noting its importance for food security and the Emir of Karaye, Mahammad Mahraz, expressing optimism about its positive impact on the farming community.

Representatives from the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) praised the initiative, underscoring its potential to reduce food costs and bolster support for farmers.

As economic challenges persist, the collaborative efforts of government officials, traditional leaders, and agricultural associations are crucial in providing relief and ensuring sustainable food security for the people of Kano State.
