The Kano State High Court No. 18, sitting in Kano and presided over by Justice Fatima Adamu, has ordered the suspension of the interim leadership of the popular Kantin Kwari market pending the determination of a case challenging its legality.
The order followed a suit filed by Sharhabilu Abdulkadir, Secretary of the market’s interim committee, who accused the current leadership led by Abdullahi Sharu na Malam of overstaying its mandate and violating the association’s constitution.
In the suit, Abdulkadir argued that the interim executives were initially appointed for a three-month tenure but allegedly attempted to extend their stay in office without following due process. He further alleged that the leadership had sidelined him from major decisions and had been running the affairs of the market contrary to established procedures.
He therefore prayed the court to suspend the interim leadership to ensure fairness and allow for proper examination of the dispute.

After hearing submissions from both the claimant and the defendants — including the Kano State Ministry of Commerce and Ibrahim Tukur Gadanya, who were joined in the suit — Justice Fatima Adamu granted Abdulkadir’s request.
The court consequently ordered the suspension of the interim leadership headed by Abdullahi Sharu na Malam until the case is fully determined.
The matter has been adjourned to December 3, 2025, for further hearing.
The ruling has stirred fresh tension within the bustling Kantin Kwari market, regarded as West Africa’s largest textile trading hub, as traders await the court’s next move in the leadership tussle.
