The Akwa Ibom State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police (CP) Baba Mohammed Azare, has urged hotel owners and managers across the state to join forces with law enforcement in identifying and apprehending criminal elements in the state.

On Monday, January 27, 2025, a strategic meeting at the Police Headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, made the announcement.

CP Azare issued a stern warning that hotels found to be harboring criminals would face raids and temporary closure to facilitate investigations.

The event gathered key stakeholders from the hospitality and tourism sectors, including the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), Nigeria Hotels Association (NHA), and Restaurants and Bars Association of Nigeria (RABON).

Also in attendance are members of the Hotels Owners Association (HOA), Association of Professional Chefs of Nigeria, Hospitality Consultants and Managers Association of Nigeria (HOCMAN), and the Airport Taxi Association of Nigeria.

During the meeting, CP Azare highlighted intelligence reports indicating that some criminals were using hotels as hideouts or operational bases.

He called on hotel owners and managers to be proactive in monitoring the activities of their guests and maintaining accurate records of those checking into their establishments.

“It is your responsibility to ensure that your premises are not used as safe havens for criminals. Any hotel found to be harboring or covering for such individuals will leave the Command with no option but to raid the premises and shut it down for investigations,” CP Azare stated.

He also urged hoteliers to promptly report any suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station, emphasizing that early reporting could help prevent crimes before they occur.

In response, the President of the Hotels Owners Association in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Daniel Udoh, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for his proactive measures to enhance security.

He commended the police command for engaging the hospitality industry in its efforts to maintain peace and order in the state.

“We appreciate the proactive approach of the police in fostering this partnership. We will take immediate steps to enhance security within our premises, including maintaining accurate guest records, monitoring activities, and promptly reporting suspicious individuals to law enforcement,” Mr. Udoh stated.

CP Azare reiterated that security is a collective responsibility, stressing the importance of collaboration between the police and the hospitality sector in maintaining Akwa Ibom’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states.

“Our goal is not to disrupt your businesses but to ensure peace and security for residents and visitors alike. Let us work together to make Akwa Ibom a model of safety and hospitality,” he concluded.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment from both parties to foster a safer environment for businesses, residents, and tourists in Akwa Ibom State.
