The Senate on Wednesday went through a bill seeking for carving the proposed Tiga State from Kano as the bill underwent first reading at the red chamber.
Senator Kawu Suleiman Abdurrahman, a lawmaker representing Kano South, introduced the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Creation of Tiga State Bill, 2024.
The bill, according to the lawmaker, aimed at establishing Tiga State from Kano and underwent its first reading on July 10, 2024.

In conjunction with the bill’s introduction, Senator Bamidele Michael Opeyemi (Ekiti Central), Senate Leader, highlighted ongoing efforts to amend the Standing Orders of the Senate.
“The amendments are essential to ensuring our legislative processes remain adaptable and effective,” Senator Opeyemi explained. “We aim to reflect current realities and optimize the Senate’s operational framework.”
The Senate acknowledged the necessity of updating the Standing Orders, previously revised in 2023, to accommodate new legislative priorities and streamline committee functions. Amendments include enhancing Order 8(2) to align with contemporary governance needs.
The bill will undergo further readings and scrutiny by Senate committees to evaluate its feasibility and impact.
