Autopsy: Drug Reaction Possible Cause of Singer Mohbad’s Death

The autopsy report on the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has indicated a possible drug reaction as the cause of his death.

According to The Cable, the autopsy and toxicology tests conducted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) suggested that Mohbad may have suffered a fatal anaphylactic shock or drug reaction.

Anaphylactic shock is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction. The hospital retrieved samples from the late singer’s gastric contents, blood, bone marrow, liver, kidney, and lungs for toxicology testing.

The tests revealed traces of diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, in Mohbad’s blood system. Antihistamines are commonly used to treat allergies, stomach issues, colds, and anxiety. However, the report clarified that the drug concentration was not high enough to be fatal.

The autopsy and pathological tests also noted an injury to Mohbad’s right forearm and moderate to severe decomposition of his body, which had been exhumed eight days after burial.

Despite these findings, no significant gross anatomical findings were attributed to his death. The report stated, “It is noteworthy that the body neither had an autopsy nor was embalmed prior to interment on the second day.

Following the Order for Exhumation, the body was exhumed on September 21, 2023 (8 days after the burial). Autopsy revealed moderate to marked decomposition of organs. Apart from the superficial injury on the right forearm, no significant gross finding could be attributed to death.”

Mohbad’s body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, to ascertain the cause of death. During a hearing at the Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu in November 2023, the counsel for the Lagos State Government, O. Akinde, claimed that a toxicology test had been conducted in the United States.

However, the National Medical Services Laboratories in Pennsylvania refuted this claim in response to inquiries by PUNCH Online, stating that no such test was conducted at their facility.

The autopsy report, while providing some insight, leaves unanswered questions regarding the precise cause of Mohbad’s death, as the findings suggest that the drug reaction was not lethal. Further investigations may be necessary to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
