Leader of the pan-Yoruba sociocultural group, Afenifere, Pa Ayodele Adebanjo reportedly died on Friday morning at his residence in Lekki, Lagos, at the age of 96.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement released to the public.
“He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria home at the age of 96. We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice. His belief and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was total, and this he fought for until he breathed his last breath,” the statement read.
The statement was signed on behalf of the family by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.

Pa Adebanjo was a renowned lawyer, former Organising Secretary of the Action Group, and the National Leader of Afenifere, a position he held with distinction.
Throughout his life, he was a staunch advocate for democracy, good governance, and Yoruba self-determination, remaining a vocal critic of policies he believed undermined Nigeria’s unity and progress.
His influence on Nigeria’s political development spanned decades, and he was instrumental in shaping the progressive ideology of the country’s southwestern region.
A steadfast disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Adebanjo championed policies rooted in federalism and social justice.

Pa Adebanjo is survived by his wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His legacy as a principled leader and advocate for democracy will continue to inspire generations to come.
Details regarding his funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
