Kano Police Reject Governor’s Eviction Order Of Deposed Emir

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, AIG Usaini Gumel, has provided justification for the police’s decision to ignore the eviction directive concerning the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

The order was issued by Governor Yusuf through the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi, late Thursday night.

The directive instructed the police to evict the deposed Emir from the Nasarawa mini-palace, where he has been residing. While addressing newsmen on Friday, AIG Gumel stated that obeying the governor’s order would be equivalent to “jumping the gun.”

“The police will not evict the deposed Emir because the same government has filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which would come up on Monday, June 24, 2024,” Gumel explained. He emphasized that proceeding with the eviction before the court’s decision would be premature and could be seen as an attempt to pre-empt the judicial process.

“The government is jumping the gun because the same government has filed a case on the eviction order, which is coming up on the 24th of June, 2024. So, if we carry out the order, it is like we are preempting the court because we don’t know what will happen at the court,” Gumel added.

In light of this, security has been significantly increased around the Nasarawa mini-palace. Additional security personnel have been deployed to the area, and all four major routes leading to the palace have been blocked by security forces.

Despite the governor’s directive, the deposed Emir remains in the mini palace, surrounded by his retinue of palace guards and supporters.

The situation has created a tense atmosphere in Kano as the public and political observers await the court’s decision on Monday.

The governor’s directive and the police’s subsequent refusal to act have sparked widespread debate about the balance of power between state authorities and law enforcement agencies.

As it stands, the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero continues to reside in the Nasarawa mini-palace, with the police maintaining a strong security presence around the premises.

The unfolding events have captured the attention of the state, with many anticipating the court’s ruling to bring clarity to the situation.
