Barring the unforeseen, Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf of Kano State will declare a state of emergency in the education sector on Tuesday.

This comes a few days after the state government set up a seven-man committee to investigate the mass failure of students in the recently concluded qualifying examinations for senior secondary schools in the state.

Grassroots Parrot recalled that the committee’s terms of reference include determining the extent of the examination failures, examining the causes of the mass failure, and assessing whether there was compliance with the established procedures for releasing the results.

However, the governor, in a statement on Sunday, said the move to declare a state of emergency in the sector was to enhance the delivery of educational services and ensure quality education for all in Kano.

The statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, quoted the governor as claiming that the development was in fulfillment of one of his crucial campaign promises.

“It is in fulfillment of one of his crucial campaign promises outlined in his document titled “My Commitment for Kano,” which was formulated and presented to the public in 2022, ahead of the 2023 elections.” The statement said.

“The declaration of a state of emergency in education is intended to hasten actions in delivering services to guarantee access to quality education for all in Kano,”

“Concerned about the deteriorating state of the education sector, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is prepared to declare a state of emergency in education in order to expedite a comprehensive overhaul of the sector and propose a definitive solution to the current challenges in higher, secondary, and primary education.” The statement said.

According to the statement, the forthcoming event will convene all pertinent stakeholders in the field of education.

The statement outlined the stakeholders, which include state and federal agencies, the Minister of Education, governors from other states, members of the academic community, and representatives from the media.

It added that the program billed for Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at the open arena of the Government House in Kano will be broadcast on national television and various local stations.
