The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day and announced a restriction of movement from 8 p.m. on Friday to 6 p.m. on Saturday ahead of the Area Council elections.
Wike made the announcement in a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations, urging residents to participate actively in the polls.
The directive was conveyed in a press statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
He called on residents to turn out in large numbers to elect chairmen and councillors across the six area councils, describing the exercise as a crucial opportunity to shape the future of the FCT.

He also urged voters to conduct themselves peacefully, respect the rules, and accept the outcome of the election.
According to the minister, the work-free day and movement restriction were approved by President Bola Tinubu to allow residents travel to their communities and ensure smooth conduct of the polls. Security agencies have been directed to enforce compliance strictly.
Wike further commended the President for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, describing it as a step toward strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible elections.
Residents of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji, and Kwali will vote to fill 68 positions — six chairmanship seats and 62 councillorship roles. The campaign period, which began in September 2025, concludes today.
