The Kaduna State Government has reinstated the traditional five-day school week in all public schools, effectively reversing the four-day schedule introduced during the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abubakar Sani-Sambo, during a meeting with members of the Kaduna Government College Old Boys Association at his office.
In December 2021, former Governor El-Rufai had introduced a four-day workweek for public servants, which took effect from December 1 of that year. The policy was later extended to public schools on January 10, 2022.

It was promoted as a measure to boost productivity and work-life balance, drawing inspiration from flexible work practices adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prof. Sani-Sambo explained that the decision to return to the five-day school calendar was guided by the government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector. He emphasized that improving teachers’ welfare remains central to enhancing productivity in schools.
“Our priority is to review teachers’ salaries and ensure their well-being, because a motivated teacher is a productive teacher,” the commissioner stated.
