Resign Within 48 Hours Or Face Impeachment, Rivers APC Tells Fubara

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern ultimatum to Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, demanding his resignation within 48 hours or face impeachment proceedings initiated by the State House of Assembly.

This call was made by the APC’s state chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, during a press briefing at his residence in Port Harcourt on Monday morning.

Chief Okocha accused Governor Fubara of disrespecting President Bola Tinubu by rejecting a proposed political solution to the ongoing crisis in the state. He stated,

“As a political party, we are today advising the governor; there are two options: resign honourably or be impeached. That is the position of the All Progressives Congress.

He has disrespected Mr. President, and we told him that we cannot be here and have him disrespect Mr. President.”

The APC chairman further asserted that the Supreme Court has provided additional evidence against the governor, suggesting that the House of Assembly does not need to establish any investigative committee.

He emphasized that the 48-hour ultimatum is more than sufficient, stating, “He should just resign honourably.”

In response, the Rivers State Government dismissed the APC’s call, labeling it as baseless. The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, defended Governor Fubara’s administration, highlighting ongoing developmental projects across the state’s 23 local government areas.

Johnson remarked, “Governor Sim Fubara is the best thing that happened to the state, and the majority of Rivers people are appreciative of his ability to rewrite the political history of the state.”

This development adds to the existing political tension in Rivers State, following previous calls for the governor’s resignation by the APC.

Chief Okocha had earlier accused Governor Fubara of violating the Nigerian constitution by operating without a budget and withholding allocations to local government councils.

He also criticized the governor for allegedly sidelining the State House of Assembly and local government chairmen in governance matters.
