A 200-level Mass Communication student at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, has tragically ended his life, allegedly due to economic hardship.

The student, whose identity has been withheld, reportedly consumed a poisonous substance at his residence in the Oke-odo axis of Tanke, Ilorin, last week.

According to sources close to the deceased, the young man took his own life while his roommate had left for lectures.

“We just returned to find a suicidal note that explained his inability to cope anymore, and he decided to take the substance,” a friend, who wished to remain anonymous, shared.

Before his death, the student was performing academically with a Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate (CGPA) of 4.5, demonstrating his dedication to his studies despite the challenges he faced.

Sources close to the situation revealed that the deceased was being supported by his widowed mother, who had taken on the responsibility of funding his education after the loss of his father a few years ago.

The student’s struggle to meet his financial obligations amid the ongoing economic crisis in the country appears to have been a contributing factor in his tragic decision.

“His financial crisis has been ongoing since last year when he resumed university,” said a close roommate.

“We have been doing our best to support him, contributing small amounts toward his tuition fees and helping with foodstuff.”

A senior official from the university, who also chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the tragic incident and expressed deep sadness over the loss. “This is a very shocking and sad event for the entire university community,” the officer stated.
