Kano Government Breaks Silence On Tax Reform Bills

The Kano State Government has voiced its stance on the tax reform bills proposed by the federal government of Nigeria, describing them as ill-timed and detrimental to the welfare of Nigerians.

This position was declared by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf through his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, during the 2025 celebration held at the Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theater.

The statement was released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu.

Governor Yusuf criticized the proposed tax reforms currently before the National Assembly, stating, “This tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges; Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively affects the welfare of our people.”

He further described the proposed tax hike as “ill-timed, lopsided, and inimical to the unity of the country,” emphasizing the severe economic challenges already faced by Nigerians, particularly in the northern region, amidst hyperinflation and insecurity.

The governor urged the federal government to prioritize addressing poverty and hunger, especially in the North, rather than introducing measures that could exacerbate the plight of citizens. He praised the resilience of Kano residents, acknowledging their ability to endure economic difficulties.

Governor Yusuf took the opportunity to highlight his administration’s achievements in key sectors such as healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship programs.

He also reiterated the significance of the Supreme Court ruling in January 2024, which affirmed him as the duly elected governor of Kano State.

Deputy Governor Gwarzo also used the opportunity to celebrate and address the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2024, calling it a victory for the will of the people.

He reminded attendees that the authority to appoint an emir lies solely with the governor of Kano State, urging those interfering in Kano Emirate affairs to respect the law and maintain peace.

“The reinstatement of Emir Sanusi is a testament to the principles of justice and fairness,” he added, emphasizing the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring harmony within the state.
