The Kwara State government has sanctioned a teacher, Mrs. Fatimoh Hamzat, for assaulting a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member posted to Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin.

In a joint statement issued by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, and the Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mal. Bello Abubakar, the government announced that Mrs. Hamzat was found guilty of misconduct.

The investigative panel established that the teacher engaged in fighting on duty, used foul language, displayed insubordination, and showed disrespect for the NYSC uniform, a national symbol of unity.

As a result, Mrs. Hamzat has been demoted by two grade levels, transferred out of her current school, and mandated to undergo counselling sessions.

“The behaviour of the teacher contravenes public service rules. Her actions are regrettable and do not represent the values of Kwara State,” the statement read.

The Kwara State government expressed regret over the incident and reassured the NYSC management that such actions would not recur.

“We deeply regret the actions of the erring teacher and reaffirm our commitment to fostering a respectful and collaborative environment for all, especially our corps members,” the statement added.

The government used the opportunity to urge teachers in the state to abide by professional standards and adhere to ethical conduct in their duties. It emphasized its commitment to continuous training on teaching ethics and service procedures.

The incident occurred last Thursday when Mrs. Hamzat allegedly assaulted the corps member, accusing them of disrespect. The state government swiftly condemned the act as unacceptable and pledged to ensure justice.

In an earlier statement, Hajia Modibbo-Kawu had appealed for calm, urging all parties, including the NYSC management, to remain law-abiding.

“The concerned teacher has been summoned, and necessary disciplinary actions are being taken,” she said.
