The federal government has announced efforts to dismantle “Lakurawa”, a newly emerged terror group responsible for a recent surge of violence in the Northwestern states of Sokoto and Kebbi.
The group has carried out several attacks, including the killing of 15 civilians and the rustling of over 100 cows last week in Mera, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, speaking to BBC Hausa, assured the public that measures are being put in place to neutralize the threat posed by Lakurawa.
He confirmed that additional troops and equipment would be deployed to affected areas to curb the violence and prevent the spread of the group’s activities to neighboring states.

“The (acting) Chief of Army Staff has visited the areas and has discussed with other service chiefs on how to crush these people,” Abubakar said.
“They have rolled out strategies to end the new terror group, God willing, including provision of additional equipment and troops that will be deployed to bring an end to it.”
Abubakar highlighted the unified approach taken by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, alongside the service chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, noting their commitment to implementing comprehensive strategies.

“With your prayers, we are going to decimate and end this security challenge, God willing,” he added.
While acknowledging the evolving tactics used by terror groups, Abubakar pointed to the government’s recent successes in the past year against various security threats and expressed confidence that these new measures would stabilize the affected regions.
The federal government has reiterated its determination to prevent Lakurawa’s influence from spreading, emphasizing the importance of securing the Northwest and ensuring peace for communities affected by these attacks.
