The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the death of a 96-year-old woman, Habiba Ado, who accidentally fell into a toilet pit in Sarai village, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement issued by the Service’s spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the agency received a distress call around 9:27 a.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2025, from one Usman Adamu, reporting that an elderly woman had fallen into a pit latrine.
“The Kano State Fire Service, under the leadership of the Director, Alhaji Sani Anas, received a distress call from Usman Adamu reporting the tragedy of a woman falling into a toilet pit (suckaway) in Sarai village, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area,” the statement read in part.

A rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene, but upon arrival, the officials discovered that the woman had already died.
Relatives of the deceased informed the rescue team that Habiba had been missing for four days before the tragic discovery. They also disclosed that she had been battling a mental illness.
Her body was recovered and handed over to the ward head, Musa Muhammad, for burial arrangements.
The Fire Service used the opportunity to advise residents to properly cover open pits and toilet holes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
