Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party, is set to defect to the African Democratic Congress on Monday, with a formal declaration expected in Kano.
Sources within both parties say Kwankwaso will be received by ADC leaders, including David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, following months of negotiations over a possible political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
The move comes after internal tensions within the NNPP and shifting alliances, including the defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the APC.
Kwankwaso is also expected to be joined by key allies such as former deputy governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
Although earlier talks reportedly stalled over demands for a vice-presidential slot, insiders say Kwankwaso has now agreed to join the ADC without conditions after recent high-level meetings in Abuja.

Political observers believe the development signals broader coalition-building efforts involving figures like Peter Obi and Olusegun Obasanjo, as opposition forces explore strategies to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
However, the APC has dismissed the move, insisting Kwankwaso poses no significant threat to Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The National Secretary of the party, Ajibola Basiru, said the former governor lacked the political structure to challenge Tinubu.
