Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has paid a condolence visit to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, following the tragic killings of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
During his visit to Senator Barau’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, on Monday, the governor expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and assured that justice would be served.
The attack occurred on Thursday when a mob intercepted a group of innocent travelers en route to Kano State for Sallah celebrations. The victims, identified as hunters from Kano, were brutally attacked and murdered.
A statement by Alhaji Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy President of the Senate, revealed that Governor Okpebholo extended his heartfelt condolences to Senator Barau, who hails from Kano, and pledged that the Edo State Government would support the victims’ families.
The statement quoted Governor Okpebholo as disclosing that 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with the heinous act and will be transferred to Abuja for further interrogation.

Describing the attack as both unfortunate and condemnable, the governor reiterated his commitment to ensuring justice.
“It’s deeply regrettable that such an incident occurred in our state. We are here to express our sorrow and to make it clear that we are not taking this lightly. The President is taking decisive action, and the Inspector General of Police has already mobilized efforts.
The Deputy Inspector General of Criminal Investigation Department (DIG CID) is overseeing the case, and so far, 14 suspects have been arrested.
“They will be taken to Abuja for further questioning. Additionally, we have established a committee to support the bereaved families,” he stated.
In response, the Deputy President of the Senate emphasized the need for justice, asserting that those responsible must be held accountable to prevent future occurrences.
“We cannot undo what has happened, but what Nigerians expect is for these perpetrators to be apprehended and brought to justice. You are making significant strides in this regard, and I appreciate your commitment to assisting the victims’ families.
“I urge you to persist in pursuing this case to ensure all those involved in these heinous acts face the full force of the law. This was a barbaric act, plain and simple. Bringing them to justice will serve as a deterrent to others.

“People from various parts of the country have coexisted peacefully in Edo State for centuries, and such an incident is unprecedented. I am confident that under your leadership, this will not happen again.
“I also commend your efforts to meet with the Kano State Governor today. This is a step in the right direction. President Bola Tinubu has also acknowledged your prompt response, and we appreciate your dedication, as we have been in constant communication over the past 72 hours,” he said.
