President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sacked Aisha Maikudi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University.
Maikudi’s sack was announced hours after she presided over a matriculation ceremony in the school.
Her appointment has been fraught with controversy, with some lecturers saying she occupied the position illegally.
The president appointed Professor Lar Patricia Manko as Acting Vice Chancellor for a six-month term.
Prof. Manko was mandated not to apply for the substantive Vice Chancellor position when it becomes available.

A statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, stated that the restructuring aims to “strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.”
Additionally, Senator Lanre Tejuoso has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, replacing the previous governing council.
His former position at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, will now be occupied by Senator Joy Emordi, previously the Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.
The statement said “These changes are part of efforts to address leadership issues in the country’s universities.”
Similar changes were also made at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and other institutions.
“All appointments and reassignments take effect immediately.” It added.
