Three traders have been confirmed dead and one still missing after a canoe capsized on River Niger in Kebbi State on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
The tragic incident occurred around 11:14 a.m. when the canoe, which was transporting the traders to Hikiya in the Rohiya Local Government Area of Niger State, struck a submerged stone and overturned.
According to reports, the traders were returning home after attending the Yauri market in Kebbi when the accident happened.

The lead of the Disaster Management Team of the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, Yauri Division, Nafiu Nuhu, confirmed the deaths and said rescue efforts were carried out by Red Cross personnel, officials of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and local volunteers.
“Three passengers drowned, and one person is still missing,” Nuhu said. “Some victims were rescued with the help of our team and community volunteers.”
The bodies of the deceased traders have been recovered and buried in Hikiya, Niger State, while the search continues for the remaining missing person.
