Self-Defense Will Cause Anarchy, Gov Namadi Replies General Danjuma

DANJUMA GOV NAMADI

The Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, has criticized recent remarks made by former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Danjuma on self-defense.

Grassroots Parrot reports that Danjuma had called on Nigerians to take matters into their own hands and defend themselves in response to growing insecurity.

However, speaking on Channels Television on Monday, Namadi cautioned that such a statement could lead to lawlessness.

He acknowledged Danjuma’s stature as a senior security figure, stating, “He (Danjuma) is a very senior security person and should be respected. However, suggesting that citizens should defend themselves could incite anarchy. His words need to be carefully analyzed.”

The governor emphasized that the government is actively working to enhance the country’s security framework.

He cited his state as an example, highlighting how community engagement and strategic planning have contributed to reducing violence.

Namadi explained, “Since we took office, we’ve employed various strategies, brought in experts, and engaged traditional rulers. We’ve also set up committees to facilitate communication with the people.

Now, the community understands that violence is not the answer. We are not at a point where citizens need to defend themselves.”

In addition, the governor expressed strong support for the establishment of a State Police, describing it as a feasible solution to Nigeria’s security challenges.

“The concept of State Police is still very much alive. Several states have shown interest, and discussions are ongoing at the National Economic Council. I believe it will eventually be implemented,” he remarked.

Danjuma, speaking at a public event in Takum, Taraba State, on Saturday, had urged Nigerians to defend themselves against bandits and criminals, warning that it is no longer realistic to rely solely on the government for protection.

“The warning I gave some years ago still holds true today. Nigerians must rise and defend themselves,” Danjuma declared, referring to his earlier cautions. “We cannot continue to stand by as bandits, terrorists, and criminal gangs massacre our people unchecked,” he added.
