Yunusa Adamu Dangwani, a prominent ally and former close confidant of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection ceremony, which took place in Kano, was presided over by the Kano State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas. The event drew a crowd of party supporters and witnessed the entry of dozens of other former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the ruling party’s fold.
Dangwani, who is an influential figure in Kano politics and once served as a key strategist and associate of Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), described his decision as one made in the interest of Nigeria’s future.
“I am aligning with a party that I believe has the structure, leadership, and resolve to fulfill its promises to Nigerians,” Dangwani said during his address to supporters and party leaders.
His move is widely seen as a strategic blow to the NNPP, which has relied heavily on Kwankwaso’s network and grassroots support in Kano, a critical stronghold in the North.

Political analysts suggest that Dangwani’s departure could signal further cracks within the NNPP’s Kano base ahead of the 2027 general elections.
APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas, in his remarks, welcomed Dangwani and the other defectors, assuring them of “equal opportunities and full integration” within the party’s structures. He emphasized that their inclusion would enhance the APC’s grassroots mobilization and strengthen its northern outreach.
“Together, we will build a stronger, more united APC that will deliver for the people of Kano and Nigeria,” Abbas stated.
With the 2027 elections gradually taking shape, Dangwani’s defection is expected to recalibrate political dynamics in Kano and potentially reshape alliances across the North.
