President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reform initiative.

This was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that Jega’s appointment would drive meaningful progress in the livestock sector and contribute to national development efforts.

Professor Jega, who previously served as vice chancellor of Bayero University, co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Committee alongside President Tinubu.

The committee had submitted a comprehensive set of recommendations for sustainable livestock reforms, including the establishment of a dedicated Livestock Ministry, which has since been created and assigned a minister.

Jega, 68, is also a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and currently serves as the pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education in Kano State.

He was the chairman of INEC from 2010 to 2015, overseeing landmark electoral reforms in Nigeria.

According to Onanuga, Jega’s appointment as Special Adviser is expected to reinforce the achievements of the Presidential Livestock Committee and ensure the continued momentum of reforms already in progress.

The appointment signals President Tinubu’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector, addressing longstanding challenges, and fostering sustainable development in the agricultural industry.
