Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State, his deputy Yakubu Garba, and the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Barrister Abdulmalik Sarki-Daji, alongside many commissioners and lawmakers, have embarked on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia for Hajj.

This decision comes at a time when the state is grappling with a tragic accident that claimed many lives in a mining pit.

The absence of key leadership figures during such a critical period has left residents and pundits feeling abandoned, especially in light of the recent mining pit accident that resulted in numerous casualties.

Despite the ongoing rescue operation, which has been hampered by a lack of appropriate equipment, Governor Bago’s delegation’s departure raises questions about the state’s prioritization of its citizens’ welfare.

Concerns about the state’s governance arise as it remains unclear whether Governor Bago formally transmitted power to a designated official before departing for Hajj, as required by constitutional provisions.

While sources indicate that the Secretary to State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, has assumed official responsibilities in the governor’s absence, the lack of official communication fuels speculations and adds to public unease.

Efforts to obtain clarity from government officials have been met with silence or dismissive responses.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Bologi Ibrahim, brushed off inquiries from the media, further fueling criticism and raising transparency concerns.

The timing of the officials’ departure underscores the urgency of addressing the mining pit tragedy, where over 50 laborers remain trapped following a collapse.

Conflicting reports regarding the number of trapped victims and the progress of rescue efforts only exacerbate the anguish of affected families and communities.

As the state grapples with this humanitarian crisis, the absence of key leaders at such a crucial juncture amplifies calls for accountability and transparency in governance.

Residents await official communication regarding the delegation’s responsibilities and the state’s plan to address ongoing challenges, particularly the mining pit disaster, which continues to unfold with tragic consequences.
